Make the journey work for you
Distinguish scenic rail from a local train
A reserved long-distance journey and a local commuter service can involve different check-in, baggage and arrival arrangements. For the Northern Explorer, start with the official Great Journeys station and travel information. For regional travel, use Metlink's current journey information.
Send the service name as well as the station. A train passing through a town does not establish that it stops there. Use your booking or the current timetable to identify the actual boarding station.
Choose the road leg you need
| Journey | Details to settle |
|---|---|
| Home to departure station | Pickup address, train service and required station arrival or check-in time. |
| Arrival station to accommodation | Booked arrival, bag collection, accommodation address and a contact mobile. |
| Station to another connection | The second operator's deadline as well as the first service's arrival. |
| Group joining at different places | Who needs the road transfer and where each person will meet the group. |
Do not merge the train fare and road quote when comparing your travel options. Each booking has its own confirmation and terms.
Make the station meeting point specific
“Outside the station” leaves too much open to interpretation. Ask Connect to agree a lawful pickup location, using an entrance or nearby landmark where appropriate. Tell the operator if walking between the platform and collection point will take your group extra time.
For an arriving train, include the time needed to gather people and luggage. Keep the contact mobile available after arrival and tell the rest of the group who will communicate with the driver. A platform number should not be treated as vehicle access.
Keep a plan for a changed service
Check service notices close to departure. If your rail operator announces a different time, station or replacement service, send the revised instructions to Connect and ask whether the road arrangement can be changed. A rail replacement bus may use a different boarding location.
- Save both the rail booking and the road confirmation.
- Keep the latest agreed station and meeting point together.
- Ask what notice and charges apply to a changed pickup.
- For onward connections, allow a realistic margin rather than assuming a late service can be recovered on the road.
Send a rail-to-road brief
Connect can assess the road itinerary. Rail tickets, station assistance and the train's operation remain arrangements to confirm with the rail provider.
Before you enquire
Can a pickup be matched to my train?
Share the actual service and date, then ask Connect to confirm availability and the collection plan. Automatic train tracking is not promised.
Should I use Wellington or another station?
Use a station served by the train you intend to take. Compare your rail booking options first, then request the road journey to the confirmed station.
