Escarpment Track transport planning

Choose your direction, then work out how you will get home.

The Escarpment Track links Paekākāriki and Pukerua Bay. Compare the rail option with your group's road travel needs, and ask Connect to assess a point-to-point transfer only where it helps your plan.

Make the journey work for you

Check the rail option first

WellingtonNZ's Escarpment Track guide describes access from both Paekākāriki and Pukerua Bay railway stations and recommends train travel. For many walkers, rail may connect the endpoints without a separate road transfer. Check current Metlink services and any changes for your travel date.

A custom road enquiry can still be useful if your group starts away from a station, needs to reach a different address afterwards or wants to coordinate several travellers. Give Connect the complete journey so it can assess what is practical.

Name the walking direction and collection point

Decide which end you intend to start from. Then distinguish the station, signed track approach and proposed vehicle pickup location. These are not interchangeable instructions. Agree a place where passengers can gather and a vehicle can lawfully collect them.

Travel choiceQuestion to answer
Train both waysDo services connect your origin with the start and finish on that date?
Road transfer to the startHow will you travel home from the other end?
Road pickup after the walkWhat meeting point and collection window can be agreed?
Group leaving a vehicleDoes the plan return the driver to that vehicle without an extra unplanned journey?

Keep walking decisions separate from transport

The official regional guide describes steep steps and narrow paths. A transport booking does not establish that the track is suitable for everyone in your party or open on the day. Read current trail information, weather and any alerts before deciding to walk.

This page is a road-transport planning guide, not a walking safety assessment or guided-walk offer. Follow the trail manager's current advice and make your own group arrangements for the walk. Do not set a road pickup that pressures slower walkers to rush.

Agree what happens if the plan changes

Ask Connect about an achievable collection time and how a later finish would be handled. Tell the operator which mobile will be used by the group organiser. Do not assume the driver is monitoring your progress on the track or will remain waiting throughout.

  • Record the agreed collection place and contact process.
  • Ask about a change of endpoint if the walk is shortened.
  • Check availability and charges for a changed pickup before relying on it.
  • If you decide not to walk, contact Connect promptly about the road booking.

Any alternative journey needs agreement. A road booking is not an on-call track collection or rescue service.

If rail already covers one leg, state that clearly. It helps Connect quote only the road transport you want rather than an unnecessary return journey.

Before you enquire

Is this a scheduled track shuttle?

No scheduled service is advertised. Connect can assess a requested point-to-point journey within its service region.

Can the driver collect us from the trail?

Do not assume access along the track. Any booking needs an agreed road-accessible meeting point and confirmed arrangements.
